Pushkin (Tzarskoe Selo)
In 1708 the Finnish «Saari» Grange became a country residence for the Empress Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great. Russian pronunciation corrupted the name of the estate into «Tzarskaya Miza» (later «Tzaarskoye Selo»). In 1718 a two-storied stone palace was built there and gardens were laid out. By the middle of the XVIIIth century the Grand (Catherine's) Palace (architect B.-F. Rastrelli), the Hermitage Pavillion and the Grotto Pavilion had been built, and the New and Upper Gardens had been planned.
At the end of the XVIIIth century the Agate Rooms, the Hanging Garden with ramps and the Cameron Gallery were created (architect Ch. Cameron). The Alexandria Palace was built for the Great Duke Alexander Petrovitch (architect G. Quarenghi ). After the restoration 12 halls are open to public there now.
At the beginning of the XIXth century, the Lyceum - an elite school for the boys from the noble families -was established not far from the Catherine Palace in Czarskoye Selo. The great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin spent his youth there. Now, the branch of the Pushkin Literary Museum is situated there.
