Thailand may give St. Petersburg two elephants as 300th anniversary present. The Thai government is also to give St. Petersburg's Buddhist temple a statue of Buddha, which has been restored by Thai experts, in recognition of the city's 300th anniversary. This was announced yesterday by Thailand's ambassador to Russia at a meeting with St. Petersburg Governor Vladimir Yakovlev. According to the St. Petersburg city administration's Committee for Foreign Ties, the Thai Embassy will also consider a request by Yakovlev for two elephants for the city's zoo.
In 2002 Thailand was St. Petersburg's 36th most important trading partner, with trade turnover of USD 30 million. The country exported USD 1.8 million worth of goods to St. Petersburg - mainly ferrous metals and aluminium. Imports from St. Petersburg were worth USD 28.5 million - mainly equipment for nuclear reactors, grain, and tobacco. Thailand receives 2,500 tourists from St. Petersburg each year.
