Russia approves new terminal for Pulkovo Airport
Russian authorities have approved the new Terminal 1 for Saint Petersburg Pulkovo International Airport, providing it meets all technical requirements. Terminal 1 officially opened Dec. 4, 2013 after a two-month “testing program.”
The airport had already announced that from Feb. 1 several Russia’s carriers—including S7 Airlines, UTair, Transaero, OrenAir—will transfer all domestic flights to the newly opened terminal.
Rossiya Airlines has transferred several flights there, including flights from Saint Petersburg to several cities in Germany, but because of procedural violations discovered by authorities, the Federal Environmental Industrial and Nuclear Service (Rostechnadzor) refused to issue confirmation documents.
Since early December, Terminal-1 operations were called “testing” and carriers could not transfer more flights.
Pulkovo Airport is operated by Northern Capital Gateway Co. Construction of the new international passenger terminal started in 2010. It is part of a ˆ1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) investment program by the Northern Capital Gateway consortium to renovate the airport and construct the new terminal with the aim of increasing capacity to 17 million passengers per year.
