Nikita Yavein, chairman of the St Petersburg Administrative committee for state control, protection and use of monuments, told journalists on Tuesday that the city was a European leader in terms of the level of restoration work being carried out. According to him, no restoration work had been carried out since the 1930s, with the exception of post-war repairs in the fifties, until the start to large-scale work three years ago. He said that this development was connected, above all, with increased funding in this sphere. Petersburg specialists hope that the level of financing will not be cut after the year 2003, when Russia's northern capital is to celebrate its three hundredth anniversary. Restorers are not frightened by the fact that many architectural masterpieces will remain under scaffolding up to the date next year. The main thing is to complete the work with all the available technology. In Yavein's opinion, the technology being used by the representatives of the St Petersburg school of restoration is no worse than that used by their foreign colleagues, and even surpasses it in some individual cases. In particular, the work being carried out to restore the metal Chariot of Glory sculpture at the arch to the Staff HQ building is completely unique.
