Last year, Davydenko endured a three-set match against countryman Igor Kunitsyn in the first round before falling to eventual finalist Karol Beck of Slovakia in the next.

The 24-year-old Davydenko next will face American Paul Goldstein, who dispatched German Lars Burgsmuller, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-3.

A semifinalist here last year, No. 7 Greg Rusedski bounced local favorite Dmitry Tursunov, 6-4, 6-4. The Brit had lost four of his previous five matches.

In the second round, Nicolas Kiefer of Germany rebounded from a slow start to defeat Jurgen Melzer of Austria, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen survived a marathon match with local favorite Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6). Carlsen next will face either No. 8 Fernando Verdasco of Spain or Juan Monaco of Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Also, Robin Vik of the Czech Republic advanced into the round of eight with a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 triumph over Florent Serra of France.

First prize is $142,000.
