This question was discussed on November, 18-19 in the conference of Committee on the state control, use and protection of history and culture monuments.

Some people say that the monument to Peter I of Michael Shemyakin’s work is “freak”, others name it "a thoughtful and talented portrait of emperor". Many people consider, that the symbol of city on Neva and so unusual sculpture - "two incompatible things". Architect Valery Isachenko defines the Shemyakin’s monument to Peter I as one of the best gifts to St. Petersburg: "it enables to reflect not only about a similarity-dissimilarity with the original, but also about sad destiny of Russia". At the same time legitimacy of placing of this monument in the Peter and Paul Fortress in increasing frequency is condemned.
