Old Ladoga, the first capital of Russia, is celebrating its 1,250th anniversary in partnership with St Petersburg's 300th. In fact, the settlement was first mentioned in an ancient Russian chronicle dating from 862. The exhibition will contain some 500 items, including excavated material from the Hermitage and the Old Ladoga Museum, the first showing of material found in recent digs by the Institute of the History of Material Culture illustrating daily life in the 8th to 10th centuries and fragments of frescoes from the 12th century church.
