Festival of Russian Theater in the CIS and Baltic States The 5th International Festival of Russian Theater in the CIS and Baltic States, which has already attained recognition, is held in St. Petersburg on March 14-20. The goal of the annual festival is to develop and enhance cultural contacts with Russian nationals abroad. Organizers say that “Russian Meetings help the participants of the festival feel a part of the national culture and overcome the creative isolation that Russian theaters found themselves in within the countries of the former Soviet Union.”

This year the shows presented at the Festival center, whether by chance or not, around the topic of the “great victorious city.” Russian theaters from Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Kyiv, Grodno, Tashkent and Dushanbe are bringing their production to St. Petersburg. Theater-goers will appreciate new renditions of the plays by Ostrovsky, Lesya Ukrainka, Tolstoy and Camus. Two plays by the late Grigory Gorin will also be featured, along with one of the most “infamously scandalous” shows in the recent seasons, Kabiria Nights, of the Riga Theater of Russian Drama. The show, directed by Alla Sigalova, is set to the music of Raimonds Pauls. A theater company from Vitebsk will show Chagal…Chagal on the young years of the world famous artist whose life’s work is tied to Vitebsk. The show won the Grand Prix of the Edinburgh Festival, and took part in international festivals in London, Italy, Poland, and other countries.
