History of Arts department of the European University at St. Petersburg presents the series of lectures “Will to Build. Foreign Participants in the New Mariinsky Theatre Building Competition”.
The goal of the lectures is to acquaint the citizens of the city with the works of foreign participants in the competition, who represent different trends in contemporary architecture as well as different generations. Arata Isozaki and Hans Hollein are classics, they were at the peak of their fame in the 70 – 80s; their stylistics was subject to numerous changes. Mario Botta belongs to the firm medium generation, his architecture being equally stable and firm. Dominik Perro – neo-functionalist, who started working in the 80s. Erik van Egeraat – the youngest participant, his first works date back from the 90s. Erik Moss is the architect, whose deconstruction (or neo-expressionism) became the famous phenomenon of the 90s.
One of the main questions the lectures touch upon is development of the city and the views of the above listed architects on the problems of environment and city space.
The lectures will take place on April 8, 11, 15 and 18 in the conference hall of the European University.
