The 5th International Winter Festival Arts Square brings the world-renown musicians to the city

Maestro Yuri Temirkanov The Fifth International Winter Festival Arts Square which will be held in Saint-Petersburg State Philarmonic from December 28 till January 7 will bring the world-renown musicians to the city.The focal point of this fifth festival is the music of Russia and America. With the great sounds of the world-renown St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Yuri Temirkanov, the festival will open with the captivating American violinist Sarah Chang, playing Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto. This opening concert is the beginning of a whirlwind ten days of great performances by a series of the world's leading musicians. Yuri Bashmet with his Moscow Soloists, John Lill, displaying his rare pianistic talent in a recital of Russian and American music, Russia's beloved baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, are just a few of the stars participating. And for the very first time in Russia, the festival will present the Morgan State University Choir from Baltimore Maryland USA in two stunning programs.

Further concerts in store for visitors to the festival include an evening of the music of Leonard Bernstein performed by the St. Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra with Daniel Hege, American guest conductor and the young virtuoso violinist Stefan Jackiw, a New Year's Eve concert with the Philharmonic Orchestra with Conductor Nikolai Alexeev, a special literary/musical evening featuring the poetry of Russia's great bard Alexander Pushkin, Joseph Brodsky, and American poets with their poems in music.

The world acclaimed St. Petersburg choreographer Boris Eifman will stage his new ballet "Who's who", which tells the story of the fate of two Russian ballet dancers in America.

The State Russian Museum Director Dr. Vladimir Gusev has planned a unique exhibition of the works of the famous Russian artist Boris Kustodiev (1878-1927) exclusively for festival guests. And, as always, the State Russian Museum will entertain visitors with a gala reception in the beautiful halls of the museum.

The Grand Hotel Europe, a five star Kempinski hotel, will accommodate festival guests right across the street from the Philharmonic Hall in a warm, friendly and beautiful atmosphere. Festival guests will also enjoy the luxurious opening reception on the hotel's elegant mezzanine.

And then there is the already legendary New Year's Eve Ball hosted by Maestro Yuri Temirkanov in the exquisite Yusupov Palace. One of the city's most luxurious palaces on the embankment of the Moika River, it is the setting for an unforgettable New Year's eve, replete with a concert in the jewel-like private Yusupov theatre, a gala dinner with Russian caviar to start, entertainment, music, dancing, and a breathtaking fireworks display in the courtyard.
