The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Neeme Jarvi has played in St. Petersburg again after a long break. The orchestra performed Dmitry Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. The choice of that opus is the Estonian conductor’s tribute to the memory of his outstanding teacher Yevgeny Mravinsky who conducted the first performance of the symphony in that hall in 1937. Jarvi also remembers his other teacher Professor Nikolay Rabinovich of Leningrad Conservatory who familiarized the Estonian student with the traditions of the St. Petersburg school of conducting. Jarvi has been living in the US since 1980 but he has kept a lot of his former contacts.
