The opera and ballet companies are famous the world over. The repertoire includes classics such as Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and "Swan Lake" and works by Mozart, Verdi and Rossini. The latest premiers are Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann", "The tale of Invisible city of Kitezh and the Maid Fevronia" by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky "The Nutcracker" (with the scenery by Mikhail Shemyakin), Puccini's "La Boheme" and Verdi's "Macbeth".

Year 2007 witnessed the revival of the Mikhailovsky theatre; its magnificence came back to Arts Square. The general director of the theatre Vladimir Kekhman initiated and sponsored the repair works in the building. Under Vladimir Kekhman a constellation of famous artists appeared in the theatre: Elena Obraztsova has become the head of the Mikhailovsky opera, Farukh Ruzimatov took the lead of the Mikhailovsky ballet company. New stars appeared both in the opera and ballet companies. The new quality of service and different opportunities of spending time at the theatre made the Mikhailovsky especially interesting for the theatre-goers. The project of the Mikhailovsky Theatre and «Ginza» restaurant enables the public to enjoy the gourmet food.
In the new season the theatre presented three ballet premieres: a romantic story «Giselle, ou Les Wilis», a fairy tale for children «Cipollino» and a heroic epos «Spartacus» and two opera premieres: «Cavalleria Rusticana» by Pietro Mascagni and «L’elisir d’amore» by Gaetano Donizetti.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre for the first time participated in the «Arts Square Festival» and the St.Petersburg International Economic Forum. Famous ballet teachers from Europe and America come to share their experience with the Mikhailovsky ballet company. The Mikhailovsky Theatre is an inherent part of the cultural city life.
