System of Interior Waterways
of the North-West of Russia

Sea Port

Historically, Saint-Petersburg is the centre of the North-West Region of Russia. The region itself is a connection-link between Europe and Asia. It has two strategic outlets to the Baltic (and further to the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean), and Barentsevo Seas. Besides, the northern part of the Volgo-Baltiysky Waterway goes through its territory with outlet to the Caspian Sea.

The region includes five basins:

I. VOLGO-BALTIYSKY BASIN (5065km)
St. Petersburg – Tcherepovets, towards Great Novgorod and Pskov (1398km). Outside the North-West Region’s area the basin widens towards Astrahan.

It is a main chain of the interior water system of the country in trade with Central and Northern Europe’s countries, and one of the most interesting tourist routes.

I I. BELOMORO-ONEZHSKY BASIN
Vosnesenje – Belomorsk, several canals to provide access to the ports.

I I I. SEVERNY (ARHANGUELSKY) BASIN (1614km)
Arhanguelsky sea port – Kotlas, and to the East and South from it.

I V. SUHONSKY (VOLOGODSKY) BASIN (694km)
Connects Vogo-Baltiysky basin and Severny (Arhanguelsky) basin.

V. PECHORSKY BASIN (1321km)
Located in the Comi Republic.
