By the External Affairs Committee jointly with a social organization “Association of International Cooperation” and an association “Japan – Russia” a plan for holding in 2003 festivals -- “The Japanese Spring in St. Petersburg” and “The Year of Japan in Russia” has been developed.
In the framework of St. Petersburg’s 300th anniversary Japan presents St. Petersburg with 1,000 young sakuras. As a place for the trees’ implantation can be chosen the Tavrichesky Garden currently under reconstruction. In the garden there are picturesque water pools near which it would be comfortable to plant sakura. Besides, sakura trees can be planted in the new park of St. Petersburg’s 300th anniversary where it is planned to install a Japanese “stone lantern” – a gift from a twin city of St. Petersburg – Osaka.
Care after the young trees will do specialists of the Management of Gardens and Parks Economy with participation of St. Petersburg Botanic Garden.
According to Botanic Garden specialists, the soil of St. Petersburg is suitable for growth of these trees.
