Ecology of Big City 2014
March 19, 2014 - March 21, 2014

More than 100 Russian and international companies presented their latest innovations in the field of environmental protection at the XIII Ecology of the Big City international forum, which was held from 20 to 22 March. The importance of the event in the industry was confirmed by the attendance of 2,500 specialists.
The forum featured a unique balance of conference and exhibition events. In a display covering more than 6,000 square metres, equipment and services used to address environmental protection tasks and ensure environmental safety were presented by participants from 25 Russian regions and nine other countries.
At the opening ceremony Dmitry Golubev, Chairman of the St Petersburg Committee on Natural Resources, Environmental Protection, and Ecological Safety, said that the aim of the forum was not only to bring together representatives from Russian regional environmental protection bodies and suppliers and producers of equipment and services, but also to provide tangible benefit to city residents. Viktor Lozhechko, Chairman of the St Petersburg Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on Ecology, shared this opinion, adding that it was essential to devote particular attention to fostering a culture of environmental awareness in our society.
The business programme of the forum began with a conference entitled ‘Topical Issues of Environmental Protection in Russian Cities’. In addition to a discussion of the practical aspects of state regulation of natural resources, the conference included the unveiling of St Petersburg’s Draft Environmental Policy to 2030. As Dmitry Golubev remarked in his speech, the document was developed on the basis of suggestions by residents and community environmental protection organisations.
Forum participants displayed particular interest in the seminar entitled ‘Environmental Legislation, Law Enforcement, and Ecological Monitoring of Enterprises’, which attracted more than 200 specialists. Companies from St Petersburg and the Russian regions gave an interactive presentation about how to ensure that businesses comply with environmental legislation.
The quality of ecological monitoring was discussed during the seminar; specialists learned that its accuracy had seen a 15% increase on account of equipment being replaced as part of the programme to develop and introduce geographic-specific systems to monitor the state of the environment in St Petersburg for the period from 2013 to 2017.
Matters relating to environmental protection information services were also discussed. Specialists shared their experience of creating and introducing the ‘Environmental Passport of St Petersburg’, a state information system covering the environment and natural resources. This resource, which provides information on the results of 18,000 analyses of soil samples, 30,000 sources of emission of harmful substances, charts of land pollution by heavy metals, and much more, is used by over 300 people every day.
In a round table entitled ‘The System of Household Solid Waste Management in Cities’, ecologists discussed the problem of dealing with various types of industrial and domestic waste, citing Russian technologies used for treating and recycling them. This subject was developed further in a conference on Russian and international experience of dealing with manufacturing and consumer waste, during which Coca-Cola Hellenic and Yaroslavl Region’s Department of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources described their experience in this field. Experts from Germany, Austria, and Finland shared their experience of land recultivation of polluted areas with their Russian colleagues at an international conference. In turn, representatives from Vodokanal St Petersburg presented their innovative environmental technologies and equipment at a specialist seminar.
As in previous years, trips were organised to St. Petersburg companies, so that environmental specialists from the regions could see the technologies that had been discussed used in practice. This year, sites such as the Coca-Cola Hellenic plant and the MPBO-2 waste recycling plant were included.
A particularly popular part of the Ecology of a Big City forum was the presentation area, where companies demonstrated their latest developments. Jean-Marie Sevar, President of Flow-Tronic (Belgium), together with technical specialists from Neco, spoke about methods for water flow metering in pressure and non-pressure lines, as well as the organisation’s designs for commercial water meters at a seminar.
For the first time, the Ecology of the Big City forum featured a meeting scheduling system, which facilitated 60 business contacts between representatives from Russia, Germany, Italy, China, the Czech Republic, and Estonia. This free service was organised to maximise the value of participating in the exhibition, enabling participants to plan their own personal schedules. The St Petersburg Committee on Natural Resources, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety was an active participant in these meetings.
