Theatres

Theatre

St. Petersburg is a city of theatres. It you don't make at least one visit to the theatre, you will fail to gather a full impression of the city. Bear in mind that when visiting the opera, ballet, or concert halls, it is standard practice to dress up. For small theatres and workshops, on the other hand, everyday dress is quite acceptable.

Many of St. Petersburg's theatres have a long history and fine traditions. Such are, for example: the Mariinsky Theatre, the Musorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Major Dramatic Theatre, the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the Musical Theatre of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, the Komissarzhevskaya Dramatic Theatre, the Large Puppet Theatre.

St. Petersburg has more than 50 ticket shops and kiosks selling tickets to the city's theatres. The most central of these are at Nevsky Pr. 42, Nevsky Pr. 22-24 (kiosk), Nevsky Pr. 9 (kiosk), Nevsky Pr. 190, Sredny Pr. 27 (Vasilievsky Island). There are ticket kiosks situated in the foyers of many metro stations.

In order to avoid being disappointed, it is wise not to buy tickets from unofficial traders. Below we give an example of what may happen if you do.

A group of tourists walking along Nevsky Prospect was approached by a young man who introduced himself as a trader of theatre tickets. He offered them tickets to the Swan Lake in the Mariinsky Theatre. Since tickets to the ballet are in great demand and cannot always be bought in the city's ticket shops, the tourists were quick to take up the offer. When they turned up at the Mariinsky that evening, however, they found that the seats they regarded as theirs had already been occupied: the tickets were counterfeit.

Be on your guard when using theatre cloakrooms: this is another place where pickpockets are active. When you hand over your coat and hat, you will be given a numbered token. Take good care of this: should it fall into the wrong hands, its finder will be able to claim your coat and walk away with it.

In theatre bars, as everywhere, be careful about who you get into conversation with. It is best not to let strangers treat you to a drink. When you get up from your place in the intermission, remember not to leave your bag on the seat.
