This museum is one of the oldest museums in the country. It occupies the building of the Exchange and contains a valuable collection of ships, 5,000 paintings on marine topics, over 3,000 banners and flags, about 7,000 specimens of armaments and other exhibits. The most interesting of them include: Peter I's Boat ("grandfather of the Russian Navy"), a submarine, the I-16 warplane.
In 1956 the "Aurora" cruiser has become an affiliate of the museum. The cruiser is tied up to the bank at the Petrovskaya embankment. The cruiser represents the revolutionary past of Russia, for it was the first Russian ship to defect to the Bolsheviks. It was this very ship that with a blank shot gave start to the assault of the Zimniy (Winter) Palace on November 7, 1917.
Another interesting branch of the museum is the D-2 "Narodovolets" sumarine that participated in the Great Patriotic War. It was set up on a granite pedestal near an exhibition hall of the LENEXPO.
