The only museum telling the history of the exploration of the poles has been established in 1930. The exhibition shows the nature, flora and fauna of the polar regions, the stages of the North-East Passage exploration, the ethnography of the Northern nations, the personal achievements of the Papanin group etc.
The museum occupies the building of the former St. Nicholas's Church (arch. A.I. Melnikov, 1820-1826) and may be soon moved elsewhere.
