This museum, situated in the Arts Square, is Russia's main ethnographical museum, containing the richest collection of materials on the peculiarities of the cultures of Russia and the former USSR.
The museum was founded in 1934 on the basis of the Ethnographics Department of the Russian Museum. In 1948 it was supplemented with the funds of the Moscow Museum of Nations of the USSR.
Various expositions that are frequently updated provide comprehensive knowledge on the origins of the country's ethnic groups, the main stages of their cultural history, their economical conditions and lifestyles.
