Kunstkammer

The Kunstkammer is one of the world's largest ethnographic museums and the first museum founded in Russia. It was established in 1714 by the order of Peter the Great and based on Peter's own collection.

The exhibits tell us about the genesis of races, the history of primitive society, the culture and everyday life of the peoples of all continents. The collection of various anatomical abnormalities is of great interest, too.

Originally, the museum was situated in the Kikin Palace, in 1727 it has been moved into the building designed especially for this purpose (architects G.I. Mattarnovi, N.F. Gerbel, G. Chiaveri, M.G. Zemtsov, 1718-34). It consists of two three-storied buildings, connected by a multilayered domed tower.
