Official for visitors opening of the Amber chamber will take place on May 31, 2003 in the framework of the St. Petersburg 300-anniversary celebration. For the present moment 95% of the restoration work in the chamber has been accomplished.
The restoration of the Amber chamber of the Ekaterinisky Palace in Tsarskoie Selo which treasures were massively stolen by the Nazi troops during the WWII started in 1979, after the decree of the USSR Counsel of Ministers. Six tones of amber have been used so far in the restoration work. The amber supplier for this chamber is the Kaliningrad Amber Center.
From 1979 till 1999 the work was financed from the federal budget, the total sum amounted to $7.754mln. In 1999 new agreement was signed; in accordance with it the final phase of the restoration work is being done by means of grant from a German firm – “Rourgas AG” -- amounting to $3.5mln.
