Cathedral mosque on Petrogradskaya Storona built at the beginning of the XX century to the design of Stephan Krichinsky with participation of architects Nikolai Vasilyev and Alexander Gauguin is one of the largest and northern in Europe.
Before St. Petersburg’s 300th anniversary the mosque, for a long time being in scaffolding, will finally appear in all its grandeur.
During a press-tour organized by international press-center “300 Years to St. Petersburg”, the mosque’s mufti and chairman of St. Petersburg’s regional association of Muslims Jafar Ponchaev was speaking of restoration works. Principal difficulty lies in restoration of a mosaic panel of the Western portal looking to Kronverksky Avenue. The thing is that the design on the panel was done with hundreds of thousands of majolica details which, because of a high humidity, lost in color so that masters have to restore them as well. For the present moment, more than 80% of the panel’s square has been restored. Till the end of this autumn the facade will be totally restored.
