New memorial complex devoted to Russian seamen to be erected due to St. Petersburg 300th anniversary
10.09.2002 17:39

New memorial complex devoted to Russian seamen to be erected due to St. Petersburg 300th anniversary For St. Petersburg’s 300th anniversary at the spot of inflow of the Novo-Admiralteisky Channel into the Neva river will appear a memorial complex devoted to Russian seamen.

It is supposed that in its final design the memorial complex will consist of three components: a white-stone Chapel Savior-on-Waters, “Krasin” ice-breaker – museum and a diesel-electric submarine of project 641 (“Foxtrot”).

The place for memorial was chosen not by chance – in 1911 on the site was consecrated a white-stone Temple Savior-on-Waters erected to the memory of the Tsusima battle. In the Temple hung bronze panels with the names of the perished seamen: from sailor to admiral. Each new marine tragedy is reflected on a new panel of bronze. In 1932 Bolsheviks utterly removed the temple. A few years ago it was decided to erect a Chapel on the spot. In accordance with the order of the Governor of St. Petersburg V. A. Yakovlev, the Chapel was founded in 1998.

On October 9, 2002 the relics saved in the families of Russian seamen who left Russia after the revolution of 1917 will be passed to the Chapel.

Ocean submarine showed up here not by chance. The submarines of this – the largest in the USSR -- series were constructed not far from the site – at the Admiralty works. Totally, from 1958 to 1982, 75 “Foxtrot”’s was built.

The history of “Krasin” is rich, too. This famous ice-breaker was built before the revolution of 1917 and became a museum 10 years ago.
