“Italy has prepared an extensive program for St. Petersburg tercentennial celebration. The program underscores the importance of this event and the historic contribution of Italians to the look of this city,” Adolfo Urso, Italian Deputy Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade told Gov. Vladimir Yakovlev during their meeting on March 5. Mr. Urso is visiting St. Petersburg as head of a large delegation of officials and business figures from the Apennine Peninsula. In Mr. Urso’s words, the Italian program for St. Petersburg tercentennial comprises a whole volume. “One of the events was presented today, as the seminar on restoration of St. Petersburg landmark buildings and cooperation to that respect between Russia and Italy opened in Anichkov Palace,” the Italian politician said. There are other surprises in preparation for the festivities, including a week of Italian films and cuisine, a football match by Milan FC, a concert of famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti and a performance of Teatro alla Scala, as well as Italian fashion shows. Italy also presents new lighting for the inner courtyard of the Hermitage and new floors for the Passage Mall. There are many other projects in the Italian portfolio. During the meeting in Smolny representatives of Italian business spoke in favor of opening direct air service from St. Petersburg to Italian cities and expressed interest in developing tourism and building new hotels in the city.
