St. Petersburg tercentenary will be celebrated by an expedition to Elbrus in May 2003

The project "Elbrus 2003" dedicated to the St. Petersburg Tercentenary is launched by the St. Petersburg State University, Russian Geographic Society and the Roerich Family Institute and Museum.

In early May the Expedition will make for Mineralnyye Vody in the Caucasus (Stavropol Region) and Mount Elbrus (Kabardino-Balkarian Republic) where it will collect historical materials about the first scientific expedition from St. Petersburg to Mount Elbrus headed by General Emmanuel. It was organized in the middle of the 19th century by the St. Petersburg University and the Academy of Sciences. The participants’ chief task will be to ascend the top summit of Europe and Russia, Mount Elbrus, on the Victory Day, 9 May, 2003, and depose there the official symbols of St. Petersburg and the Banner of Peace, the symbol of the world’s first International Agreement on Protection of Institutions of Science and Culture and Monuments of History (The Roerich Pact, Washington, 1935).
