According to the plan, the restoration of Alexander column on the Palace Square will be completed on April 30.
One of the symbols of St. Petersburg, the angel, topping the column, is already renovated, the Committee on Protection of Historical and Cultural Landmarks informed Interfax. Besides, the works on the foundation of the column and its surface have also come to an end; the waters were drained and patina cleared off. Due to the lack of financial resources, recreation of the railing, which had previously surrounded the column, was postponed till autumn.
The restoration of the column started in June 2001. Hazer International, Turkish company, made a proposal to start renovation work and allocated 4.2 million rubles, afterwards however it gave up further financial support.Most of the restoration works were funded by the city government, which allocated 6 million rubles on.
The last time the column was restored 40 years ago.
