Italian program for the anniversary of St.Petersburg
05.16.2003 17:15

Plácido Domingo, one of the most hugely anticipated guests of the celebrations Roberto Antonione, Italian deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Marco Ricci, Consul General of Italy in St. Petersburg, told the press about the presents from Italy to the “city, which is a precious toy for Russia and the whole world”.

Genoa municipality will lend St. Petersburg two violins Guarneri del Gesu and Vuillaume, created by Nicolo Paganini and his student Camillo Sivori. The violins will play during one of the gift-concerts on the shores of the Neva. Besides, chamber orchestra Cameristi Triestini, La Scala ballet company, Florentine orchestra Maggio Musicale and Arleccino theatre will come to St. Petersburg.

On the Day of the City, May 27, Peter the Great – Tsar of Russia or the Carpenter from Livonia, opera by Gaetano Donizetti will be performed on the newly restored ground at the mansion of baron von Dervise. Business Week will be organized in September, as another jubilee present. One of the days of this week will be dedicated to the presentation of Impredjilo, a company, that works on reconstruction of Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya subway line. Besides, busts of Italy-Petersburg architects: Rastrelli, Quarengi, Rossi and Rinaldi will be placed in Manezhnaya square. The statues will cost Italian government 50 thousand dollars.

The list of guests coming to the jubilee is yet to define more precisely. Mr. Antonione said at the press conference that participation of the famous tenors – Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo entirely depends on their own schedule. Italian authorities are arranging negotiations, the tenors “want to visit St. Petersburg very much”. “Knowing how impulsive they are, I do not exclude the possibility, that one of them will come”, deputy Minister encouraged the audience.

Silvio Berluskoni, Italian prime-minister, will arrive to St. Petersburg at the end of May. Besides, almost all the members of Italian government will come to St. Petersburg during 2003, and governors of Italian regions “are lining up” to come to the Northern capital.
