Joint-Stock Company Mobile TeleSystems is largest operator of cellular communication of GSM 900/1800 standard. By now, the amount of MTS active subscribers has reached 2503 million people, MTS network is working in 34 Russian regions and counts 2109 base stations and 20 commutators. The net profit of the company for the 9-month period (2001) is estimated to be $636m, EBITDA – $299m.

On December 11, 2001, MTS has announced its functioning in the North-West of the Russian Federation, including St. Petersburg.

The ceremonies of MTS cellular network opening in St. Petersburg and Leningradskaya Oblast were finished with fireworks.
