St. Petersburg-Stockholm Ferry Traffic

The work on the St.Petersburg - Stockholm ferry line project is going on. At the same time, the pace of the project execution leaves much to be desired, said Director General of JSC Morskoy Vokzal, the Russian party in the project.

The project provides for launching a weekly cargo-and-passenger service operated by two vessels. The Russian party is holding negotiations with a Norwegian company, which is to act as a partner of JSC Morskoy Vokzal. The date of launching was planned to be set in February. However, the parties faced a serious resistance from foreign (Swedish, Finnish, Baltic) ferry operators. After the USSR collapse, the Russian ferry fleet was sold to Baltic companies, who now carry Russian cargoes, and so do Swedish and Finnish operators. Naturally, none of them is interested in launching of a new line, said V.Malik.

JSC Morskoy Vokzal has nevertheless managed to reach an agreement on one ferry, which is to operate on the line; the second ferry is currently negotiated. The company management plans to apply to Governor of St. Petersburg for assistance in fulfilment of the project, thought as promising for both the city and the region on the whole.
