A meeting of international experts devoted to developing a transport corridor between Finland and northern Russia has begun in Karelia. According to the republic's press office, the seminar is being attended by representatives of local administrations, road agencies and law-enforcement departments from the Finnish region of Oulu, Karelia and the Arkhangelsk Region. Participants are particularly interested in developing the Oulu-Karelia-Arkhangelsk-Komi highway. It has been proposed to construct a new USD 1.2 billion stretch of the highway through Karelia. The money will be provided by Russian and foreign investors. Participants are also discussing ways of developing the region's rail, air and water transport network.
