Peterstar to invest USD 500,000 in Wi-Fi hot spots around St. Petersburg

Wi-Fi hot spots Independent telephone operator Peterstar intends to invest around USD 500,000 in a programme called World Wide Web City by the end of this year. According to Peterstar's general director, Viktor Koresh, the programme will see public Internet access points set up in cafes, stations, educational institutions and hotels. Koresh was unable to say when the project would break even. 'It is an investment in the future,' he said.

The Internet access points will be equipped with Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) technology. According to Peterstar's telematic services director, Petr Akulshin, two Internet kiosks are currently undergoing trial runs in branches of the Ideal Cup chain of coffee houses. The kiosks will start charging for their services at the end of July, with access costing 35 roubles ( EUR 1) for half an hour. Payment will be by special cards that can be bought at the cafes.

By the end of the year, Peterstar plans to install 15 terminals at Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg, the Sea Port, and cafes, cinemas, schools and universities. The company also plans to set up broadband Internet access in 12 St. Petersburg schools by the end of the year.
