EU to allocate EUR 24 million for construction of sewage treatment plant in St Petersburg

Head of the EU in Russia Richard Wright Head of the EU in Russia Richard Wright and Director of Vodokanal Saint Petersburg Felix Karmazinov signed a memorandum yesterday to build a sewage treatment plant in Saint Petersburg.

Mr Wright told journalists after the meeting that the new plant would reduce the level of sewage pollution in the city and the Baltic Sea. The plant will treat 330 thousand tonnes of waste every day which should reduce the volume of untreated waste in the city by 50%.

Mr Wright said that the EU is allocating EUR 24 million to the project. He said that the construction company would be chosen this autumn and construction will get underway at the start of 2004. The plant will be put into operation by the end of 2005.
