Nokian forges ahead with factory

Nokian forges ahead with factory Finnish company Nokian Tyres launched the construction of a tire plant in the Leningrad Oblast, investing 52 million euros in the first phase of the project.

The decision to build the new production facility was made by the Nokian Tyres board of directors on Feb. 11. Documentation is currently being reviewed by the Leningrad Oblast government. Sergei Naryshkin, former head of the Oblast's international economic committee and now deputy head of the economics department of the presidential administration, said in a telephone interview that he does not see any substantial obstacles to the plant's construction.

Nokian Tyres, the northernmost tire manufacturer in the world, ranks twentieth in the world and fifth in Europe and is the leading producer of tires in Scandinavia, based on the company's net sales.

The Leningrad Oblast project is being pursued in a partnership with Amtel, 96 percent of which is owned by Dutch company Amtel Holdings Holland. Amtel is one of the leading tire producers in Russia, occupying more than 20 percent of the Russian market. It operates three tires plant in Russia - in Kirov, Voronezh and Krasnodar - and one in Ukraine.
