Poyry continues to develop wastewater treatment in St. Petersburg

ZAO Vodokanalstroy

Poyry has concluded an agreement with a Russian Contractor, ZAO Vodokanalstroy, to prepare detail designs for reconstruction of Northern wastewater treatment plant in St. Petersburg, Russia. In addition, Poyry will assist the client in commissioning and in training of operational staff. Major part of the design work is carried out by the local office in St. Petersburg as the part of an international team. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the assignment.
Vodokanalstroy will implement as a design build
contractor the works in years 2012 - 2015. The project is part of the Neva Direct Discharges Closure Programme. After completion of this major water protection programme, approximately 98% of wastewater generated in St. Petersburg is collected and treated biologically fulfilling the recommendations of HELCOM - an international commission protecting the marine environment of the Baltic Sea.
Poyry has actively engaged in development of the programme from the beginning. Poyry, as the lead consultant, completed in years 2005 - 2006 a feasibility study based on which the investment programme was developed. The investment programme is financed among others from the proceeds of the loans from and the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and from grants of the Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP), Ministry of the Environment, Finland and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
After completion of the feasibility study Poyry has prepared an operational plan for the Northern sewage tunnel collector and automation designs for the sewage tunnel pumping station. Furthermore, Poyry assists the Ministry of the Environment in the Finnish supplies to the tunnel pumping station and has prepared a design to reconstruct the Central wastewater treatment plant.
"Reconstruction of the Northern wastewater treatment plant in St. Petersburg is a major milestone to the City in reduction of the wastewater loading to the sea. Collection and treatment of wastewater has positive impacts on the environment and on welfare of the citizens of the City", tells Matti Iikkanen, Vice President, from Poyry Finland Oy.
