During the reign of Emperor Paul I, a complete architectural ensemble, consisting of a monument to Peter I, of a three-fold bridge and of canals filled with water, was situated in front of the Castle. It has been proposed to rebuild Voskresensky Canal, to create an undersurface passage to Mikhailovsky Garden, to fully restore the three-fold bridge and to reconstruct the square. The need for these restoration works is brought about by several factors. First: our city does not have a square, or even a street, named after its founder Peter the Great. Second: such reconstruction will restore Mikhailovsky (Engineering) Castle's original Romantic appearance, in the spirit of late 18th and early 19th centuries.
