First space flight commemorated in St. Petersburg.A sand sculpture in honour of this event is currently being created near Peter-and-Paul's fortress. The 4-metre-high sculpture, commemorating Yuri Gagarin's 1961 flight, will be built on the beach alongside the fortress by a group of Russian sculptors under the leadership of Viktor Chernyshev (Moscow). The celebration of the anniversary also involved a space technology show, during which a model of a Mars-walking machine was demonstrated by specialists from VNIITransmash institute. The design of this machine was developed by the institute's workers for the exploration of the Red Planet. Photo by S. Smolsky, ITAR-TASS.
