World War II began for Russia exactly 60 years ago, on June 22, 1941. A ceremony of laying flowers and wreaths took place Friday, June 22 on St. Petersburg's Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery. Hundreds of St. Petersburg war veterans came here to commemorate those who died in the war. Governor Vladimir Yakovlev, Vice Governor Yuri Antonov and Authorized Representative of Russia's President in the North-Western federal district Viktor Cherkesov participated in a meeting held near the Monument of the Motherland.
