Ferry traffic at the St. Petersburg - Kaliningrad - Kil (Germany) route started.The first motor ship "Trans Russia" departed from the St .Petersburg port berth on August 18. As Vladimir Yakunin, RF vice-minister of transport reported at a press conference, dedicated to the route opening, ferry traffic is the first stage of implementing the project of establishing the railway and motor communications at the Ust-Luga (Leningradskaya oblast) - Baltiysk (Kaliningradskaya oblast) - German ports line. One ship Po-Po (Po-12) of the "Mekhanik Evgrafov" type will be used for calling at Kaliningrad twice a week. In autumn and winter to keep the ship calls schedule another ship will be added. "Trans Russia" is a two-decked motor ship with stern ramp, assigned for 50- and 40-feet containers, 12-metres trailers, wheel technique and packed cargo trafficking. The ship-owner is Trans Russia Express company (TRE, Finland), the operator is JSC "Baltic Transport Systems" (Russia). According to V. Yakunin, due to calling at Kaliningrad the volume of cargo transported by the St. Petersburg - Kil line will increase by approximately 2 mln. tons a year. Wilfred Anders, the TRE company representative specified that calling at Kaliningrad will allow to load a ferry by extra 22-25%.
