The Marble palace, built in 1768-85 by the architect Antonio Rinaldi by the order of Catharine II for her favourite Grigory Orlov, was rebuilt not once. In 1840-50 the architect Aleksandr Brulov refinished interiors of ceremonial halls, church and dwelling rooms, built three new galleries and an open suspension garden. At that time the White Hall appeared, being the largest hall of the palace.
