Eight new parks and gardens will be built, and six renovated in St. Petersburg's tercentennial year.On March 3 the city government discussed the state of affairs in the development of the city’s parks and gardens. The press-service of the Governor’s Office reports that at present parks and gardens in St. Petersburg cover the area of 31 192 hectares, or 56 square meters per each city resident. Some RUR 327 million were spent to maintain the city’s parks and gardens in 2002, and the 2003 is set at RUR 383 million. Eight new parks and gardens will be built, and six more renovated during the anniversary year. Renovation projects will commence in the Yablonevyi Sad in Frunzensky District, and Sosnovka Park along Severny Prospekt in Vyborgsky District. New parks will be built near the Suzdalsky Lakes, in Kolpino along the Izhora Embankment, and in Rzhevka-Porokhovye. To establish stricter control over the state of affairs in this area the Governor is planning a special decree establishing rules for maintenance, support and other operations in the city’s parks and gardens, and setting up compensations for incurred damage.
