HELSINKI, September 18. Finland will donate EUR 10 million to construction work on the sewage system for the south-west district of Saint Petersburg. According to the ministers' press office, the money will be allocated to SWTP Construction, the company responsible for construction. The money will be used to pay for Finnish equipment necessary for the sewage system.
Completion of the construction project will cost around EUR 190 million altogether. Most of this money will be provided by loans from international banks. Over a quarter of all the funds have been donated. The EU will finance the construction of a sewage incinerator. The financial contribution of the Saint Petersburg company Vodokanal will come to less than 10%.
Once construction is complete the sewage system will serve 700 thousand city residents which will reduce the current level of waste spilled into the Gulf of Finland by about a third.
