Mel Martinez, the US secretary of housing and urban development, had a meeting yesterday with Valentina Matvienko, the governor of Saint Petersburg. Martinez mentioned the matter at a Monday press conference. Martinez said the meeting would take up questions of housing privatization, residential mortgage financing and construction.
'I eagerly await my meeting with the new governor of the city, partly because Matvienko is the first woman to lead Saint Petersburg as I am the first immigrant of Spanish descent to become part of a US administration,' Martinez emphasized. 'We are pioneers and, as such, we have much in common. In some ways, we are the first.'
