Such “winter” date has been chosen not by chance. “We want to emphasize that a unique possession of Russia and Canada, the expanses of the North, unite these both countries, and the latter are called to preserve and develop them", said Mrs. Anna Biolik, the Consul General of Canada in St. Petersburg.
This symbolical gift is Inukshuk, that is made of natural stones and has a human figure. The Inuits of the Northern Canada mark off the significant place or use such constructions as the direction pointer. The Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien declared the decision of the Canadian government during his St. Petersburg visit in May 2003. The city’s administration supported this proposal and found the most appropriate site for Inukshuk – the Institute of People of the North attached to the Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen. The opening of Inukshuk will happen in the framework of the first official visit to St. Petersburg of the Canadian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Russian Federation
