Saint-Petersburg commemorates 60th anniversary of lifting of siege of Leningrad Jubilee ceremonies began today in Saint Petersburg commemorating the 60th anniversary of the lifting of the 900-day siege of Leningrad during World War II. As part of the festivities, the city will once again be officially referred to as Leningrad.

In addition, torches, which were lit at the eternal flame next to the Kremlin wall in Moscow as well as at monuments to the Unknown Soldier in the WWII hero cities of Sevastopol, Kerch, Minsk and Brest, arrive in the city later today. The torches will be triumphantly arranged on armed troop carriers in a guard of honor procession moving from the Moscow Station to Victory Square. Saint Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko will take part in the procession.

Later tonight a laser light show by Russian film director Alexander Sokurov will light up the center of the city to the music of Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive in Saint Petersburg tomorrow to participate in the celebration. According to the president's press service, Putin will participate in the laying of a wreath at the Piskarev memorial cemetery and meet with veterans and residents of the Leningrad blockade.
