Los Angeles to honour its sister city St. Petersburg

Los Angeles to honour its sister city St. Petersburg Los Angeles will on Saturday honor its sister city St. Petersburg at a charity winter ball that will benefit children and senior citizen's charitites and cultural organizations in St. Petersburg. Held in the Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica, the ball will have as a theme the spirit of Peterhof. Guests will include Russian and American business and political leaders, including the Russian Consul General to Los Angeles Victor Lizun, and well-known figures from the worlds of sports and entertainment, the statement said.

Russian figure skating coach Tamara Moskvina and Tom LaBonge, a member of the Los Angeles City Council are to receive special awards.

Entertainment includes music, dancing and ballet and a special Fabergé "Treasures of the Czar" exhibit and sale will be presented with a portion of the sales proceeds going to the designated charities, the statement said.

"2003 celebrated the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, one of the world's most stunning and culturally rich cities, and the LA St. Petersburg Sister City Committee held a number of spectacular events in celebration of the occasion," Nicole Goesseringer, chief organizer of the ball, was quoted as saying. "This year, we are pleased to celebrate the Spirit of Peterhof, and those individuals who are dedicated to promoting positive exchange between our two unique cities, as well as to raise money for some very worthwhile and needy causes."

The Los Angeles-St. Petersburg Sister City Committee was established in 1989 by L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley and St. Petersburg Mayor Anatoly Sobchak.
