Saint Petersburg festivities mark its 301st year The Northern Capital began celebrating its birthday yesterday. The festivities began with a wreath-laying in honor of Peter I, founder of the city, at the Bronze Horseman, the great equestrian statue to Peter in Senate Square.

Other events planned for the day included: the grand opening of 'Moscow Days in Saint Petersburg,' at the Mihailovsky Manege as well as events at the Peter and Paul Fortress and on Palace Square. Vladimir Spivakov was to lead a birthday concert in Smolny Cathedral Thursday evening.

On May 28, orchestras participating in the 9th International Festival of Military Wind Orchestras perform at many sites in the city, including the Peter and Paul Fortress, the courtyard of the Capella, the monument to Catherine II near the main library and others. The Ice Palace will feature an exhibition by top Russian figure skaters and entertainment by leading singers and comedians.

Other events include a Palace Square concert featuring Dmitry Khvorostovsky that will be dedicated to the 200th birthday of composer Mikhail Glinka. A new production of Glinka's opera, 'A Life for the Tsar,' will have its debut at the Mariinsky Theater.
