The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexiy the Second will run the celebrations of a return to Russia of one of the most worshipped Orthodox icons, that of the Mother of God of Tikhvin. Legend has it that it was painted by Lucas the Apostle in Jerusalem in the 1st century A.D., the icon that surfaced in Russia in the 14th century. It was held in the United States since 1949 and taken to Latvia three days ago. Thousands of people came to worship it in Riga. Later today the holy image is due to arrive in Moscow, where it will stay at the Church of Christ the Saviour for four days, with worshippers allowed to venerate round the clock. Then the miracle-working icon (and there is numerous evidence of the icon’s miraculous healing) will be taken to the place it historically belongs to, the Tikhvin Monastery near St. Petersburg.
