Sestroretsk was founded by Peter the Great in 1714. The first building in the area was the Tsar’s residence, Northern Monplaisir. Shortly after the Sestroretsk Armory Plant, which used to be one of the country’s main arsenals was founded. Today Sestroretsk is one of the biggest resort and sanatorium centers in Russia’s Northwest.
