Russian-American Anti-terror Forum in Saint-PetersburgThe Second Russian-American Forum on Law Enforcement Technologies to Counter Terrorism ended on Friday in St. Petersburg, a spokesman for the news conference in the Russian Interior Ministry told reporters.
The forum's Russian organizers were the main department of the Russian Interior Ministry for the Northwest Federal District and the Scientific and Industrial Association (NPO) of Special Materials.
Russian and American experts exchanged experience in developing and using technical means and special equipment in countering and preventing terrorist acts. The means of individual and collective defense used by the police were also discussed.
Special equipment was demonstrated in field conditions at the base of the NPO of Special Materials. The American experts were shown the X-ray system, perfected by Novosibirsk scientists, that makes it possible to fully examine a clothed person within several seconds and detect foreign objects under the clothes. The system is the unique in the world in both quality and price.
Forum participants had the chance to witness the functioning of the devices for localizing explosions and range practice from different types of weapons at the Interior Troops testing ground.
The director of the US Northwest Center of National Law and Order and Corrective Technologies Robert Griffiths told reporters U.S. experts are interested in many electronic devices for spotting explosives.
He said that many technologies, demonstrated for participants are especially meant for rigorous climatic conditions and undoubtedly will be used in the USA.
According to Mr. Griffiths, the American experts were greatly impressed by the protective qualities of Russian bulletproof vests.
The General Director of the Special Materials enterprise Mikhail Silnikov told reporters that the American standard does not take into consideration the characteristics of Russian bullets which keep its form when hitting a bullet-proof vest.
He said that nowadays American bulletproof vests are mostly designed to withstand national firearms. However, the standards are likely to be unified in the near future.
