An international scientific and practical conference entitled "The state and perspectives of the development of the tourist and recreation system 'Silver Belt of Russia' in the Northwestern federal district" met in St Petersburg on Thursday.
As the committee for physical culture, sports, tourism and youth policy of the Leningrad region reported, the main aim of the conference is to work out practical recommendations for the formation and functioning of the tourist and recreation system, "Silver Belt of Russia," and to promote it at international and domestic tourist markets. (At the beginning of the 1990s, thanks to the efforts of the city's first mayor Anatoly Sobchak in many respects, the historic name of St Petersburg was returned to Leningrad, but the authorities of the region left the old name of the region, Leningrad region.)
The conference participants discussed the following items: the structure and content of the "Silver Belt of Russia," a federal targeted program now being worked out, cooperation between the subjects of the Federation in forming and promoting the tourist and recreation system, the tourist and recreation potential of the Northwestern region and its use within the framework of the "Silver Belt of Russia" program, and the economic and legal aspects of the implementation of this program.
The conference was attended by staff members of the apparatus of the plenipotentiary representative of the Russian President in the Northwestern federal district, the head of the project group for the European Union's program for developing tourism in the northwestern region of Russia, Eliseo Boito, by the heads and experts from the Petersburg and regional profile institutions, scholars specializing in this sphere, and representatives of the tourist industry.
Apart from that a delegation from South Moravia (Czech Republic) came to the conference. In October 2004, the Leningrad region signed an agreement with it on cooperation in the economy, culture, tourism and education.
Incidentally, there is also a "Golden Ring" tourist route in Russia, which is very popular among Russian and foreign tourists.
